Hair Transplant Surgery Glossary

If you're considering undertaking a hair transplant or hair restoration procedure, it's important that you understand the terms are being used.

Dr. Koher will be happy to sit down with you and discuss your needs and expectaions as they relate to the hair transplant procedure.

  • HAIR TRANSPLANT: The process of removing hair follicles from the donor area and transplanting them to the recipient area.
  • HAIRLINE REFINEMENT: The correcting of "pluggy" looking areas which resulted from the use of superceded hair transplant techniques.
  • MALE PATTERN BALDNESS: The hereditary condition that causes gradual loss of hair follicles. This condition is triggered by the hormone Dihydrotestosterone.
  • MICROGRAFT: A graft containing one or two hairs.
  • MINIGRAFT: A graft containing between three and six hairs.
  • MULTI-UNIT GRAFTS (MUG): A graft that contains more than one follicular unit. Multi Unit Grafts contain between two and six follicular units
  • MULTI-UNIT GRAFTING: Performing of the hair transplant procedure using multi-unit grafts.
  • RECIPIENT AREA: The area in which hair follicles are to be implanted during the hair transplant procedure.
  • SCALP REDUCTION: A surgical procedure where an area of the scalp is removed, then the edges of hair bearing scalp are brought closer together.
  • SCALP ROTATION FLAPS: A surgical procedure where a strip of hairy scalp is lifted and rotated over and area of balding skin that has been removed.
  • SLIT GRAFT: The process whereby a "sliver" of hair is transplanted to a slit in the scalp.
  • TEMPLES/TEMPORAL AREA: Ususally the first area where male pattern baldness is observed, the temples, or temporal area is the two outer corners where the hairline meets the forehead.
  • TEMPORAL POINT: Where the temporal area meets the sideburns.
  • TISSUE EXPANDER: A balloon-like piece of equipment which is used to enlarge the scalp on the sife of the head (hair bearing areas), enlarging the area of hair which can be used to replace bald areas.
  • TISSUE EXTENDER: A piece of equipment used to stretch the scalp.
