Non Surgical Hair Loss Solutions

There are several options available for the treatment of hair loss. Knowing the options available to you, will allow you to make an informed decision on where to begin the treatment of your hair loss. Dr. Koher believes multiple therapies used in conjunction with each other is the best strategy for maintaning optimal results.

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

The MEP-90 is a stationary low-level laser device that promotes hair growth and provides treatment for androgenic (androgenetic) alopecia in male and females. The device provides automated and timed equal distribution of laser light to 100% of the scalp.

The MEP-90 operation is controlled by an operating system that affords the user maximum flexibility for individual treatments. The device applies a measured very high tolerance (+.76%) wavelenght (λ)to the scalp stimulating hair growth by the proven concept of biostimulation. The MEP-90 is substantially equivalent to other pulsed therapeutic light therapy systems currently in commercial distribution. It exceeds the clinically accepted therapeutic results standardds of FDA 510(k) K060305 previously approved light therapy system into a system which provides a more controlled application and larger treatment coverage area at no increased risk to the patient.

The clinical data acquired confirms both the safety and effectiveness of the MEP-90 for prescription use in promoting hair growth in the intended patient population, despite the difference in technological characteristics between the MEP-90 and K060305. The clinical and effectiveness data demonstrates that the MEP-90 is effective in promoting hair growth, does not present any safety issues, is classified by the FDA ad a non-significant risk (NSR) device, therefor the FDA approved the medical device by approval of the 510(k).

(The above information is specific to the clinical study conducted by Dr. Grant F. Koher at the Koher Center for Hair Restoration and full content of the studyis listed on the FDA website).

Propecia (Finasteride) is a medication taken daily for the treatment of hair loss. Propecia blocks the formation of a key factor of certain types of male pattern hair loss (MPHL). Propecia is the first pill that effectively treats MPHL on the vertex (at top of head) and anterior mid-scalp area.

Propecia blocks the formation of DHT in your scalp. Lowering the DHT appears to inhibit the further shrinking of affected hair follicles.  Based on a photographic assessment by an expert panel of dermatologists following 5 years of clinical studies. Most men in the clinical studies saw results 3-12 months after starting Propecia. If Propecia has not worked for you in twelve months, further treatment is unlikely to be of benefit.

Women who are or may potentially be pregnant must not use Propecia and should not handle crushed or broken Propecia tablets because the active ingredient may cause abnormalties of a male baby's sex organs. If a woman who is pregnant comes into contact with the active ingredient in Propecia, a doctor should be consulted.

In clinical studies for Propecia, a small number of men experience certain sexual side effects. Each of the side effects occurred in less than 2% of men and went away in men who stopped taking Propecia because of them.

The iGrow laser is a hands-free low level laser therapy device.  Today, low-level lasers and improved technology make a portable, affordable and practical solution possible to be used in the comfort of your home.  Studies proved that hair responds best to red light in the 650 to 670 nanometer wavelength range, and test have shown that pulsing light can enhance the effectiveness of low level laser therapy.

With regular use, individuals can expect to see an improvement in hair condition within a 12 week period. For best results, the iGrow should be used 2 or 3 times per week on non-consecutive days; consistent use provides optimum results. "The average patient will first begin to see decreased hair loss in about 6 to 8 weeks. Then, within a few short months, their hair should begin looking thicker, fuller and healthier. At the nine-month mark, they'll see the maximum result and then, with continued use of the iGrow, should be able to maintain those results."

Rogaine (Minoxidil) is a topical solution (or foam) used to regrow hair in both women and men.  Minoxidil goes on easy, and dries quickly, and helps reverse the progression of hereditary hair loss. When used twice a day for 4 months, the majority of men (85%) experienced hair regrowth. If used correctly and consistently it can help regrow, strengthen and improve failing follicles.  Rogaine/Minoxidil stimulates and prolongs hair follicles' active growth (the Anagen phase), causing the hairs to thicken and grow longer and needs to be used consistently over time. Rogaine can be purchased over the counter at any drug store or pharmacy in both 2% and 5% concentrations. Rogaine can be used in conjunction with other treatments such as low level laser therapy, hair transplantation, and Propecia for optimal results. A small percent of patients report irritation on the scalp, or interference with hairstyling and may need to stop the medication for that purpose or may try switching to the Rogaine foam.  For more information on topical therapy contact our office for your free consultation.
